Chris Hughton Leaves Newcastle United

The big news today is that Newcastle United have sacked their manager Chris Hughton, after 14 months in charge. The excuseRegrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward”.

In one sense this comes as a surprise as the club sit comfortably in mid-table, sitting in 11th place with 19 points from 16 games. He’s had some memorable results this season including a brilliant 5-1 victory over rivals Sunderland, a 1-0 defeat away to Arsenal, and a 1-1 draw over Chelsea in the league as well as a 4-3 victory over the champions in the Carling Cup. But on the other hand; there has been speculation over his job for quite some time now, while a 5-1 defeat to Bolton and 3-1 loss to West Brom didint help his cause, its seems his time with under controversial owner Mike Ashley (below) has come to an end.

As I’ve said many times before, I’m not a fan of managers being sacked or being hounded by the media, but if a team is under pressure, struggling to rack up points in the league or even under the owner ship of an impatient billionaire; then I can somewhat understand the dismissal of a manager.

But to sack a man who stuck with the club through its recent turmoil’s while taking the role as manager at St. James’s Park when seemingly no one else was interested in the job? To sack an individual who helped Newcastle clear their well documented “massive” wage bill and bounce straight back up in the Premiership at the first time of asking, and with a club record 102 points? All displays a distinct lack of respect for the man, and the job he has done at Newcastle, a commendable one at that.

As stated above; he achieved some great results this season, improved the club greatly and got them back on their feet after their embarrassing 2008/09 relegation campaign. He’s earned the plaudits for getting the best from his players, such as Joey Barton, Hatem Ben Arfa, Kevin Nolan and one of the best prospects in the Premiership Andy Carroll.

Despite all these positives, as far as I can see, he hasn’t done too much wrong, but now sees himself out of the job. From the information from fans, not only Newcastle but football fans; they are not happy with the decision, and many people are appalled by the decision. Some of the names linked with the vacant job are Alan Curbishley, Alan Pardew, Ian Dowie, Phil Brown (although I personally hope never to see this man in the Premiership again) and the runaway favourite Martin O’Neill.

Let me know who you think should take over at St. James’s Park, and what your thoughts are about the dismissal.

Premier League Preview - Newcastle United

Newcastle United

Newcastle United makes their return to the Premiership after year in the Championship thanks to three years of turmoil which saw them relegated the end of the 2008/09 season. With 102 points in the bag, Newcastle finished top of the Championship ahead of West Brom.

Now with the players, the staff and the budget under control, Newcastle are looking for consolidation in the Premier League, and it looks very possible considering the experience calibre of players available.

Kevin Nolan, Alan Smith, and Joey Barton are the most experienced players in the squad previously playing for Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United and Manchester City respectively. While Shola Ameobi, Fabricio Coloccini, Steve Harper and Jonas Gutierrez were members of the side relegated two seasons ago.

This time around, expect the Magpies to establish themselves in the Premiership while fending off the threat of relegation.

Key Player: Andy Carroll

The talented, yet controversial young striker was instrumental in Newcastle’s challenge for the Championship last year scoring 17 goals in 39 games. He made his name coming through the youth ranks and impressing for the reserves, before making his debut as a 19 year old and scoring 3 goals in his first 14 Premier League appearances.

Now making his return to the Premiership with his home town club, the 21 year old will lead the Newcastle front line with Peter Lovenkrands, Xisco and Leon Best.

Manager: Chris Hughton

Key Signing: Sol Campbell

I was tempted to say young Marseille winger Hatem Ben Arfa, who is expected to sign on a loan in this coming weeks, so instead I’ve gone for the experienced former England international Sol Campbell, who joins on a free transfer from Arsenal. The 35 year old is a solid, yet quite slow, centre back with invaluable experience and winning mentality which will help Newcastle if they are to grind out results this year.

Aims: Avoid relegation

Prediction: 16th

I believe Newcastle have enough quality and collectiveness to stay up, mainly due to the experience in the squad and the great fan base, which act like a twelfth man. A few more additions are needed, but Newcastle should be a lot more organised and motivated to keep their Premiership status this time round.

Welcome Back...

Real Talk Football would like to congratulate Newcastle United for winning The Championship and therefore gaining promotion to the Premiership.

After a season full of turmoil, whereby Joe Kinnear, Kevin Keegan, and even legend Alan Shearer managed the club, the conflicts between the board and the management were the clubs undoing leading to Newcastle being relegated from the Premiership for the first time in 16 years.

The Magpies, managed by former Republic of Ireland player Chris Houghton, beat Plymouth 2-0 on Monday night and condemned the green and whites to relegation. Goals on the night came from the excellent young prospect Andy Carrol, and club vice captain Kevin Nolan.

Newcastle United now currently sit atop of the league with one match left to play, a game in which if they win, they will end with an astonishing total of 101 points. The club has the joint best attack (with fellow promoted side West Brom) with 87 goals.

Despite losing the likes of Damien Duff, Sebastien Bassong, Shay Given, Strikers Obafemi Martins, Mark Viduka and Michael Owen, the club have still been very impressive this season, bouncing back at the first time of asking. With this in mind, let’s look at who have been the key men in Newcastle's promotion:

No. 1 – Steve Harper – Goalkeeper - #1

He has played for the club since 1993, and has established himself as one of the most loyal and consistent number 2’s. Finally after the sale of World Class keeper Shay Given to Man City, he was given his chance for the Number 1 jersey, which he grabbed with both hands. This season he has been in fine form this season playing 44 out of 45 games, keeping 21 clean sheets, making 215 saves in the process. Expect the Englishman to continue to keep goal next season.

No. 2 – Kevin Nolan – Attacking Midfielder - #4

The former Bolton midfielder had offers to join Premiership clubs when the Magpies were relegated last season, but decided to stay with the team and fight for the cause. The midfielder didn’t score a single goal in his 1st season with Newcastle, but in this current campaign he managed a career best 18 goals, picking up 5 assists in the progress. A key member of the team, he is their top league goal scorer and is now the clubs vice captain.

No. 3 – Fabricio Coloccini – Centre Back - #2

The Argentine defender had a mixed 1st season at St James Park, but has now settled in England and been solid for the Magpies, situating himself at the heart of the Newcastle’s defence this season playing 35 matches, scoring 2 goals. Most impressively though is that Newcastle boast the best defensive record in the league only conceding 33 goals.

No.4 – Andy Carroll – Striker - #24

The 6ft 5in striker has had a very good season, establishing himself as a 1st team regular, pairing up with the likes of Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands. He is the second highest top goal scorer at the club with 17 goals this season, while possessing skills leading him being compared to club legend Alan Shearer. The striker has also chipped in with 8 assists and is expected to go from strength to strength with the Newcastle.

Welcome Back, hope you guy’s stay around for a while...
